MADISON, Wis. -- This season's final Concert on the Square Wednesday kicked off with a toast to the 25,000 people estimated to be in attendance.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportThe toast was a sign to the audience that no bomb scare would keep fans away from one of Madison's proudest summer traditions."It's always great, every year," attendee Sharron Huett said. The event was almost interrupted when authorities said they found a suspicious device a block away and had to call in a police barricade."They had the police tape up right here, so nobody was over on that side," attendee Joni Hewitt said. "Everybody's curious to see what was going on.""We started as business-as-usual, then sort of got the call about things going on here in the park," Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra member Doug Gerhart said. "But the good news for us is that we were able to set up all of our table area here in the front while they were conducting their business."By mid-afternoon, Concerts on the Square organizers said they knew they could conduct their own business -- one last show."The impact to us was rather minor. It made us delay maybe an hour and a half in getting some things set up, for example the catering truck," Gerhart said. Those who attended the last show said they appreciated the music, as well as their safety."I feel it's a pretty safe place. They had the same scare last night, and it was false, and they're playing a game, and it's just too bad," Hewitt said."I don't think we should allow any individual or individuals to ruin other people's enjoyment," Huett said.Businesses that were blocked off by the police barricade Wednesday afternoon said they lost some business, but they said they think they made up for it and more with Wednesday night's big show. The police presence at the show was not as heavy as many attendees said they thought it would be. Officials said it was on par with other performances.Police also said they apprehended a suspect and there was little reason to worry.
